Hot Epoxy
Posted by: Andrew Wright (207.14.37.---)

So i tried epoxying the reel seat last night to the blank,
I of coarse used the precise method of pouring and checking to make sure my resin and hardener were in equal amounts.

After about 5 min, and slapping a significant amount of epoxy onto the masking tape that i used as shims, the epoxy got really
hot and melted the plastic cup and the tip of my finger.

By this time however i had the reel seat and one or 2 cork rings glued up,
so i mixed up an EQUAL batch of epoxy to finish gluing the foregrip.

My question is, IS the Reel seat safe as is?
i understand it will take a little longer to harden because the amounts were uneven,

But will the epoxy be strong enough in the long run?

BTW this is a personal rod i need to finish by opening day of salmon season, (July 1st)

Forgot to mention i have gotten a good number of laughs about the bugsbunny ring finger i have now.

Thanks for your help

I used the Flex coat Rod builders Epoxy.

I have used it in the past with great results however i needed a large batch to glue up the foregrip and the reel seat
so like i said i used the pour and check method. haha

entirely my fault, just want to make sure my seat will be ok

Sounds like you mixed too much of I would think hardener ??

Seats are put on with an arbor glued into the seat. Then reamed out to fit the blank. Very little - rod bond - used.

If the epoxy got Hot it may be brittle from the over heating ?? Rod bond is hard to mess it up when mixing.

I myself would be worrying about the blank also with the heat.

If you try to turn the seat off, I would think it would come loose with a firm grip and turning ???

Bill,

Thats what i was afraid of..
Hopefully i can manage a way to save the cork thats already glued..

I meant to say tape arbor my apologies and the other day i ordered rod bond to try some epoxy ramps with this rod..
Thank you for your help.

Any ideas on how to save the foregrip cork?

The reel seat is the aero comfort

I have had that happen before with that particular epoxy, and I still use it too. What I found is that if you leave the epoxy in a cip it will get hot, because of the reaction that takes place from mixing. If you pour the epoxy out onto after mixed, it will not happen. I still have the rod that it happened to me on, and the reel seat and grip are still quite firmly attached 3 years later. I think you will be fine, but that is just based on my experience. Alot of dual compound epoxies will release heat after mixed, so you just have to spread them out and place them on something that diffuses heat well, such as foil. Good Luck.

This sounds completely normal, the bigger the batch of epoxy the more heat it makes once the chemical reaction gets going.

WOW Thank you Mathew that is the best news i have gotten all day.

I have encountered this same problem before but that was on a practice piece..
running for the foil is actually how i got my burn. I tried to pour the hot epoxy onto the foil and it spilled on my finger.

I am glad to hear that my seat maybe in good shape

Matthew is right. I have it happen all the time on boat hull repairs. You learn in a hurry to mix it up and then pour it into a baot roller pan. Sometimes you then place that on top of ice cubes if it is hot outside. Mix up 8 ounces in a tall ice tea type glass and within ten minutes it is hot enough to shatter and completely set up. Yet the stuff you did manage to apply in a thin coat won't set up for an hour or two.

Kinda backwards to how paint works:) And your rod will be fine. No problems mixing the two batches.

try the rod bond I think it would be better. IMHO

I have had this happen with fiber glass. Too much of the clear hardener and it would get hot-turn brown-and become brittle.

When epoxy cures there will be an exothermic reaction. Such heat is normal. The more epoxy and the smaller the container, the more heat you're going to notice. It can get quite hot.

Your epoxy is plenty strong for the task at hand. Any failure, if it occurs, will not be due to the epoxy.

Next time use a larger container or pour it out onto another surface (foil, etc.) which will allow more heat to escape (which in turn lengthens the pot life a tad since more heat equals quicker set time).

I always put mine on foil and mix it there. I have learned to fold it several times with a popsycle stick. Works great but you can feel the heat some time on a large batch.
Since the rod is for you, I would not worry about it and build it on out. Put a little twist on the reelseat. If it seems solid, I would say try it. Worst thing happens is it breaks loose now or later
and you reglue it. Be sure to take a spare rod when you go fishing.
