Yes, and no. Sewing thread may contain silicone which serves as a lubricant for use in sewing machine tensioners under high speed. Silicone will tend to repel epoxy thread wrap finishes so it can cause problems.
Thread sold by the likes of Gudebrod, Pacific Bay, Fish Hawk, etc., is made expressly for use as a line guide wrapping thread and as such, it's not going to cause you any problems when the time comes to seal and coat it. But, yes, you can use regular sewing machine thread if you take the time to test it and make sure it won't cause any problems later in the game. The trick is in deciding if saving a buck on a spool is worth the risk. .................... Re: Thread

Also, thread meant for regular sewing most likely won't have the UV resistance that wrapping thread has. If you go with sewing thread, I'd be sure to use nylon or another synthetic thread.
Many use Madeira thread, which is basically meant for embroidery machines. Using color preserver can help when trying to epoxy coat silicone treated threads. Personally, I avoid using anything other than rod building thread unless there's some odd color a customer insists on that can't be had through any of the rod building thread suppliers. Re: Thread

I use predominately Madeira thread on my rods along with some Trilobal. IMO, the inportant thing is to stick with Polyestor or nylon!!!!! I have had NO problems with fisheyes or anything else. I always use a coat (sometimes more) of CP to preserve the color as close as possible. I highly recommend making "Test" wraps on an old pirece of rod or a piece of Dowel or PVCpipe (paint them black to see what it will look like on a rod). Practice, practice and practice!!!! Thread and CP is fairly cheap. ALWAYS test anything new BEFORE trying it on a rod!!
Personally, I see no reason NOT to use Madeira and other Polyestor threads on a rod. 35o + vibrant colors is a definate plus!! Mike (Southgate, MI) If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!! Re: Thread

With madeira thread since it is coated with silicone you can not use just finish to get a transparent look it Will fish eye. You must use CP. Bill - willierods.com Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
