son's first build broken by crappie

He came in last night from a crappie expedition with his buddy and showed me his first custom build . About 6 inches of the tip was gone .He said he was lifting a crappy onto a dock when it snapped. I asked him if he was high sticking it and he said no but I imagine that is what happened. Anyway , at 14 , he has plenty of energy to build another. I guess we will just tip this one where it broke . It was an ISB 780 so now I guess it will be 712 or something. Fishing has it's occupational hazards. We will just move on with a minimum of teeth gnashing. He ate the crappie, by the way.

Might be a great opportunity to learn his first repair of a break!?!

Ed,
Don't make the mistake of throwing away that wonderful 6 inches that is on the rod.
Rather take a few minutes and splice it.
Simply take a piece of fiberglass blank of the appropriate size and make a sleeve about 2 inches longer than the break on each side.
Then, take another piece of fiberglass blank about 2 inches longer than the break and put it on the inside of the blank. If the inside diameter of the blank is too small for a piece of blank material, use the appropriate sized piano wire.
Pre fit the splice, the inner and over blanks. Don't cut the raw edges of the break. You want to use the raw edges to act as a key to properly align the two pieces of the blank.
Then, mix up a batch of 5 minute epoxy. Glue the inner, blank and outer material all at the same time.
Use alcohol to wipe up any excess.
Then put a 1/2 inch wrap on each end of the splice to prevent splitting. Do a thread guide finish for the overwrap and you will be good to go with very little difference in blank action - compared to before.

Take care
Roger
