Orvis Silver Label fly rod tip section

A boy came into the shop with a sad tale. He had borrowed his grandfathers Orvis 9' 6wt graphite rod to go on a fishing trip. The rod became tangled with a boat and the tip section was broken and lost in the current. The rod is no longer under warranty because it is so old, so he was hoping to find something that could be used as a tip section just so he could have a rod to fish with. I offered to make an inexpensive rod for him but he can't afford even that.

I looked through odd and end and found all sorts of 3 and 4 wt tip sections that just lost the tip top but nothing large enough to go on the 6 wt butt section.

I'm wondering if someone out there has a slightly short 4.5' tip section that could be made to slip over the .222" male ferrule of this boys rod. The color and make wouldn't matter. it also wouldn't matter if we had to take a couple inches off the bottom to make it fit. If anyone thinks they can help reply here or email me at bmclawson@gmail.com

Thanks
Brad Clawson

I have a nine ft 6wt batson rx6 that I built and was not to happy with the football finish on the top section. The rod fishes great however. I has a nice struble reel seat and some nice trim wraps. I hate to see someone go without fishing because of money. I would tube it up for you and prepare for shipping but you need to cover the call tag or shipping expence. Tom

you write that the rod is no longer under warranty. are those your words or his? did anyone contact orvis directly with a phone call? i understand the length of years might be an issue but the company itself may be able to help in another way. if not i would suggest that first.

I'd check with Orvis. That rods might be covered under the 25 year no-fault warranty. If not, I suspect that Orvis would replace the entire rod for a nominal fee. It's worth looking into.

I agree with Tom and Eric, call Orvis in Manchester VT and ask to speak to the rod dept. They may be able to have a tip section made for the rod. I'm sure you won't be the first call they have had concerning something like this.

Thank you,Tom Nair, for your generous offer to give up a rod for this boy. We have decided, however, to take the advice of these other concerned respondents and contact Orvis. I have heard that Orvis has excellent customer service.

I knew if I put this out to the rod building community we'd get the help we needed.

Thanks

There is a happy ending to this tale.

The boy called Orvis and was told to send it in. The rod he had broken was discontinued so they sent him a comparable new rod.

I'd say that is good service.
