Start at the reel seat, you need to cut the tape at a angle to match the circumference of the blank under the seat. I use a business card wrapped around the blank, mark it and transfer that to the tape to get the angle. after that just wrap and take your time . making sure to keep it tight to itself. I do thread wraps at both ends to secure it

In addition to what Bill offered, figure that you'll need about 3 times as much tape as the length of the butt you plan to wrap. For instance, a 2 foot long butt section will take about 6 feet of tape.

Don't remove the adhesive from the tape all at once, just pull back a foot at a time and remove more as needed.

when going around the blank make sure you dont stretch, pull it to tight. Use just enough tension so it lays down naturally. No gaps in the spirals going down the blank. Roll the taped handle between your hands to make sure it is all adhered.

Barry,
Would it be easier to do the wrap - before gluing up the reel seat?
i.e. wrap the blank butt with the cork tape, and then glue on the reel seat?

Yes! I Agree. Its easier to get a Very straight Edge if you do the tape first. And use a reel seat clamp for a tight fit
