Looking to simulate finish on wraps

I am currently working on Lamiglas Excel blank. I'm having a really hard time deciding on thread colors for the guide wraps. I'm using mostly regular nylon Gudebrod thread.
So my question is this, is there anything that will simulate the effects finish will have on nylon thread not treated with cp? I thought I read once that olive oil would applied to thread would work. I want to try out a variety of colors with out having to clean finish off my blank. Since the blank is that copper color I can't really do trial runs on a dowel rod. I might end up just using cp but I wanted to do some tests with out it. Thanks Joe Re: Looking to simulate finish on wraps

I think water or alcohol will give the same effect as olive oil, but are less likely to leave a contaminant. You could also do some test wraps with real finish on the blank area that will be covered by your grip. Re: Looking to simulate finish on wraps

You're right, olive oil probaby wouldn't be the best thing to put on a blank. Re: Looking to simulate finish on wraps

Rubbing alcohol will do what you want and it will evaporate quick enough that nothing is harmed. Water will do the same but will take a LONG time to fully evaporate so you can apply finish. Re: Looking to simulate finish on wraps

Second the rubbing alcohol. I use it all the time for this. I wrap a few threads dip my finger in RA and dab it on, by the time I wrap the next color it is almost dry, no residue to deal with after the fact either. Re: Looking to simulate finish on wraps
