foam cores

Evening Gents and Ladies too,

Have a quick question for ya. I have been doing some carbon handles and pretty much winging it. Do any of you have a specific size that you make your cores prior to skinning? For instance how many cm or inches do you make the diameter to match to a 16 or 17 mm ecsm?

thanks,
Tom

Thomas;
Take the measurement of the final size you want.
Then take a micrometer and measure the thickness of the carbon cloth you are using.
Then double that dimension.
Subtract that from the final size,
And make your core that measurement.

The step by step guide on the Riley Rods website says, 0.5mm. I make fly grips so I haven't tried this.

I wish. My wife has had major back surgery and I've been to caring for her, so I’ve not made a single event this year.

Last time I was on the water was Dec.5, hopefully she will be able to care for herself in the next couple of weeks or so, and I can get back out there.
But thank you forthe well wishes! Have a lot of catching up to do.

Steve,
God's speed in your wifes recovery! At least you are saving money on gas for the boat.... I know not much of a reassurance though

the final diameter depends on the type of sleeving used as well as your finishing method. I have found maybe one mm or slightly less is the norm for me. you will have to see for yourself and your method.
