Stupid me managed to epoxy my end cap crooked .is it possible I can get a bigger one and put it over the crooked one. The grip size is bigger than the cap I have on. Its one po those aluminum caps with the indent for a gimball. Thanks

HEat it with a heat gun, put a screwdriver in teh slots, and twist it right off. DOn't apply too muchheat, heat for10 seconds at a time, be very careful to not burn the grips or melt the blank.

Steve,
You can use a torch as long as you protect the grip from the flames.

A hair dryer would be better than a torch. Open flames make me nervous around a rod.

Jeremy,
I agree, but generally speaking a hair dryer would not get the aluminum butt hot enough. The aluminum is going to dissipate the heat quite quickly.

If I were to use a torch, I would take and wrap the rod handle with several layers of aluminum tape before proceeding to heat the butt cap. The aluminum tape should protect the handle from flame damage.

Again, use the flames as lightly as possible and try to avoid any flame contact to the grip.

By directing the heat just to the bottom of the aluminum butt cap, the cap itself should conduct the heat to the epoxy to soften it for removal.

I did the same thing one time. Actually there was pressure built up when I installed the gimbal which pushed it partially off and then cured. I dipped the gimbal in boiling water for several minutes (got some strange looks from the wife) and then used a screwdriver in the gimbal notches to twist it off/work it loose. Good luck.

Roger,

Good point. I've used a hair dryer with success in removing reel seats and such, but nothing aluminum.

I suggest a wet rag wrapped around the handle in the area you are trying to protect then very carefully apply the heat. You should be able to remove the butt cap in very short order (seconds AND NOT minutes)

Thanks for the replies I'm gonna try boiling it I just need the epoxy soft enough to just move it straight .if that don't work ill wrap a damp rag aroung the grip and heat it with a torch.

Once you soften teh epoxy remove the buttt cap and reinstall. Regarding aluminum dissipating heat - if youheat it up enough to softn th epoxy, you btter not touch it for a couple of minuted unless you want to scorch your hand. That crap gets really hot.

You could also boil a pan of water . Once hot pot pan on floor and dip cap in water until epoxy softens. Twist cap! Be sure to put newspaper on floor to prevent mark from heated pan!!!!!!

I've got a big coffee cup and a microwave I use for removing rod gimbals and ferrules. Two minutes on the clock and dip the butt end in the water, if it don't go the first time, do it again as the aluminum cap will soak up a lot of heat from the water fast.
