Help a fresh water guy with a saltwater build!

Hello all,

I am trying to build a rod for my girlfriends father, who lives in Mexico and fishes in saltwater in a bay near Manzanillo, out of a small boat. I have built many fresh water fly rods, but I am at a loss as to what type of rod to build him??? I have pictures of some of the fish he has caught, but don't know if there is a way to put them up here to give you an idea of what he uses it for. One of them looks like a daulphin (mahi mahi ) maybe. I am really clueless, so any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks in advance,

John

I think he wants to know what size rod (line wt.) to build.

Cant really go wrong with the typiclal "boatrod". Something in the range of 6-7ft med action. I use several versions which mount a PENN Jigmaster type/size reel. This is assuming it is a baitcasting style rod. Does he troll, live bait fish, or cast to them? If I fish on a larger boat with casting space, I like to use a deckhand style rod of about 10ft lenght and long casting handle with a jig. Personally, I love Cal Star and Seeker rods. They are very popular all along the west coat where I normally fish Dorado and other tuna and they really perform good. If you can find out how he fishes Dorado, I could narrow it down alot better. I used to deckhand on the long range boats out of San Diego. You can email me with more specifics if you like sdrules07@yahoo.com

I have fished the bay in Manzanillo many many times jiged, trooled , bait fished and did exelent with a seeker 15-30# in a 6 foot rod. It worked great for everything in the bay except the one tuna that broke it. Im building a new one the only differanec is using guides that will withstand 40# specrtabraid.
Would love to here from you about fishing there.
