Josh,
You can locate the spine on a heavy rod the same as you can on a lighter rod. I place the butt of the rod on the floor and hold near the tip. I press on the rod near the middle to get the rod to spin to spine side out. On some rods, it's not so easy to find the spine! Here's the article from the library on building your own spine finder: [www.rodbuilding.org] Some builders will tell you that they don't build on the spine anymore. I've built rods on the spine and on the straightest axis and I can't tell the difference when fishing them so I don't waste my time trying to spine rods anymore, I just build on the straightest axis. Other guys swear by building on the spine, to each his own. Either way, you will end up with a great rod. jeremy Re: spine on heavy casting rod

Going to bump this because I'm in a similar situation, I'm building a 13'5 surf rod (3pc) and having some trouble locating the curve/spine with the roll-method. How do you find the straightest axis? Just eye down the blank? I've done this but haven't seen anything odd (as in not straight). Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
