Manufacturers change guide data??

It would be interesting to see if manufacturers would have any interest in changing the way that they label rod guides so that all manufacturers would display guide data the same way.
i.e. in the world of rod building, the thing that matters to the line is the inside diameter of the rod guide.

Wouldn't it be nice if manufacturers sold rod guides - labeled with the inside diamter of the guide- rather than the outside diameter of the guide?

Then the issues of ceramic thickness, design wall change, composition of guide material all would get dialed out and the user of any ones guides would know instantly - what the inside diameter of the guides were. Of course this would go from a size 40 guide all the way down to a size 2 guide - if there is one.

Take care
Roger

Roger,
I think the biggest issue would be the sheer number of new guide sizes listed within a product line. If FUJI relabeled all of their size 6 fly guides in different materials with the ID diameter of the ring you would go from one size to about 5 or 6....No way they want to get into this. The measurement of the ID of the frame is fine...gets you a ballpark idea...then you just have to experiment for yourself.

There are probably marketing reasons, as well.

Unfortunately manufacturers will never consider it in their interest to make it easier for us to make a direct comparison between their parts and their competitors parts, they want to keep you in their family. This is the same for blanks and components.

I can see that they wouldn't want to change the model numbers of all their guides, or start calling a #6 a #4, but I'd be REALLY happy if they would at least list the guide's inside diameter on their websites. Numbers for guide height, length, and in a perfect world - weight would also be useful.

If you can get the manufacturers to do this Roger I'll make a campaign contribution for whatever elected office you choose to run for!
