I had a guy ask me if I could re-coat some older rods he has with some new flex coat. He said the rods are in good condition just very thin flex coats on them and he would like to improve the coat that is already on them. So I always get good answer from you guys, is this possible or do I need to talk him into refurbishing the rods totally. Re: New Flex Coat over old coat

You can, but you'll need to do some prep work. Clean the old wraps and surrounding areas with soap and water. Follow with alcohol and rinse well. Then lightly scuff the current epoxy coat with Scotchbrite and dust off. Then recoat.

In addition to Toms comments -- with which I agree -- be sure to let the rod dry very very well after washing it with soap and water. I would suggest that even after drying with a towel etc. that you let the rod dry well for at least a day to be 100% sure that all of the moisture is gone. Of course, following the soap and water wash with alcohol is very good because alcohol will absorb water to some extent.
You just want to avoid moisture entrapment in the new finish. Take care Roger Re: New Flex Coat over old coat

I've done what you want to do many times. I agree with the above comments, but I've never bothered with scuffing the old finish and I've never experienced any problems with adhesion. It certainly won't hurt to scuff, but as long as everything is free of dirt and contaminates Flex-coat will stick just fine. Re: New Flex Coat over old coat
