Alternative "Micro" guides

Micro guides sizes are frequently discussed on this board generically, and as we all know, they’re sized by the outside ring diameter, so the I.D.’s vary considerably, depending on the manufacturer. I’m looking for alternative choices for “micro” guides. I’ve been using Fuji 3.5’s which have an INSIDE diameter of 1.57mm (.062”). I know that equal and smaller/lighter sizes are made, but which are they and who carries them?

Jim,

I am not sure about Fuji's but I think they may be available from a Japanese source. For Batson's give Scott at Fishsticks a shout. He may have something that you are looking for or could possibly get what you are after.

Batsom
3.5mm=1.98mm
3mm=1.53
2.5mm=1.45
2mm=0.85

As of right now the sizes are available only down to 3mm.
Scott with Fishstix is in the process of putting together an order in the smaller Batson sizes.

So if you would like some, then I would suggest calling or emailing asking to be put on advanced an order.
I know that with as many people who have emailed me asking this question. What he has coming in won't last very long.

Jim your initial statement may be a little confusing.

Fuji sizes micro guides by the measurement of the inside diameter of the frame.

The ring thickness is different for each of the materials. SIC, Alconite and Aluminum Oxide Rings and all have different ID.

If you are using the Fuji Gides with aluminum oxide rings the new Alconite K series soon to be available will have a larger ID than either the SIC or Aluminum Oxide rings.

Batson and American Tackle Micro Guides are sized based on the inside diameter of the ring. The aluminum oxide or hardloy rings are thicker than the Nanolite Rings.

I do not know a a central location for all the internal diameters of the rings that covers all the different manufacturer configurations.

There are many changes presently being made to several of the micro guides that will improve guide frame design and ring stability. I have production micro rods using the new versions of Fuji and American Tackle Guides - the manufacturers have really responded with needed changes - maybe someone will take the time to deal with publishing the dimensional data you seek.

Bill,
I assumed the outside diameter of the ring was the same as the inside diameter of the frame. Regardless….I’m only concerned with the I.D.s and the weights. There are a lot of posts regarding micro guide sizes and I’m not sure everyone realizes that the actual size differs dramatically from one manufacturer to another. A generic reference to a size 3 or 4 micro is pretty ambiguous without stating the make.

Jim, If you think the knowledge base is difficult to follow now wait till fishermen see the E21 Micro Rods (Fuji K Series 4.0 Alconite) side by side on a store rack with the Duckett Fishing Micro Majics (3.0 Duckett Fishing by American Tackle).

Steve, I gotta ask...are those #s the OD of the ceramic inserts, ID of the inserts, or ID of the frame of the Batson's?

Jerry
Those are the actual physical inside dimensions of the insert rings, measured to the best of my ability.
Used a digital caliper to obtain them.
However there could be small variances in those dimensions because the rings are so small it was hard to get the exact dimension every time even with the same guide.
If my caliper was off the perpendicular angle to the guide in the slightest there could be a +/- 0.03-5 in the measurements. So I measured several guides in each size, and each guide several times and posted the average or most duplicated numbers.
