Finish over decal on woven graphite handle??

Building a small diameter rod that requires a rather large decal; rear grip is woven graphite tube and that's where he wants the decal to go.

What's going to be best finish over the decal &graphite tube without using epoxy? I was thinking Spar Urethane or Krylon clear acrylic.

I've never tried to finish over this material, and with the addition of the decal I'd like to get it right on the first shot.

Many Thanks!

Why do you not want to use an epoxy wrap finish ??> Did some one tell you it was bad to use ???

trying to keep the finish as thin as possible and really didn't want to use pg if i didn't have to.

never heard anything one way or the other good or bad, but then again I rarely use graphite tubing, and have never finished over it.

I use Helmsman Spar Urethane. Check the photo page under my name if you want to see how this looks - how smooth and clear the finish is.

If you intend to put a decal on the grip, do so after the grip has been epoxy coated and then sanded smooth. Then top coat with a couple or three coats of the Helmsman.

Definitely use the epoxy as it was designed for what you want to protect. Save the Spar and the Krylon for lawn furniture.

A nice glassy coat of epoxy will do wonders for the finished look of the rod. Just make sure the tube is squeeky clean so the decal and epoxy will adhere properly.

Good luck.

Urethane is much harder and more abrasion resistant than epoxy. Again, check the photo page and compare the urethane coated grips against any that are said to be epoxy coated. There is a huge difference in appearance.

I've done several carbon fiber grips with decals and I use urethane as well, Much harder than epoxy

The epoxy used for rod wraps remains somewhat soft and flexible as it must for guides. It will also scratch much easier then the urethane.
