Does anyone recall a place called Midland Rod Builders Supply?
I bought a lot of old thread at a flea market and the cases had their name on the label.

sure do. i believe they were in sloatsburg, new york. they shut down around 1998/99, they put out a small catalog with saltwater tackle and rod building components. seems like i got a catalog just recently from someone in ny that made me think of them. catalog was same style as the old midland- like newspaper.

Joe, The name of the shop was Midland Tackle on old Rt.17. It was about the size of a boxcar and Woody,s right thier catalog was printed on newsprint stock. It was a great little shop and was a sad day when it closed. It was quite a trip up there from where I live but, always enjoyed the drive. I still have some of the old catalogs and post cards they sent when they were closing. Now, where did you say that flea market was! Ha Ha
Good find you got there,

I should have added that the address for this place on the shipping labels Dallas Texas.
The flea market was in FL about 8 months ago.
Maybe the name has to do with Midland TX?
All of the cases are shrink wrapped as if they were to be stored for a long time, which is why I'm curious as to how long this thread has been sitting somewhere. Not that it matters much since its all in good shape, but I was just curious.

Did a lot of orders with Midland, they carried mostly Lamiglass blanks, they also had other rod building componets, I knew the owner Harold for about 20 years, He wanted his family to take over the business, I think he had daughters, they were always helping him at the store, but I guess it did not workout. He also attended the Suffern Outdoor shows.

I remember the Midland Tackle in Sloatsburg and Harold as well. That place was great. You could find all kinds of gems if you looked hard enough. It's a shame it's gone now, I miss it.

Maybe there was two places call Midland?
The address on these labels reads
Midland Rod Builders Supplies
Dallas, Texas 75266

There is no street address listed on the label or it was cut away when the boxes were slit open along the seam.
These are cases of both 4 oz spools of individual colors, a case or two of each diameter, and cases of small spools in the normal 12 pack boxes from Gudebrod. All of it is NCP, and it looks to be 1980's to 1990's era labels and packaging. The labels don't look like UPS, Fed Ex, or USPS, possibly a freight carrier label.

I was glad to get this lot, some good colors too, lots of black, metallic violet and aqua blue, and a few boxes of empty wood thread spools too. I am thinking that they were transferring thread onto smaller spools as needed rather than wrapping right from the 4oz spools.
There's also a smaller box of silver metallic on 9 oz spools from Rice.

I can't picture a rod supplier having only this few colors, or even this quantity of a select few colors. What I did find odd was that all the black is in small spools, all the reds are in 4oz spools, and the rest is a combination. There is also some 00 size thread in a metallic looking red that I've not seen before.

The violet is what caught my eye at the show, I use a lot of that color for one customer who has to have that color somewhere on every rod he owns.
