Coating old epoxy

I went back and looked at a rod that I epoxied the threads about a month ago, and on some of the bigger guides I am not happy with the thread coverage. The rod has not been used, or even flexed really, and has been in my office the whole time. Can I add another coat of epoxy without any problems? I was going to clean them with rubbing alcohol first, but should I scuff them up too? If so, what should I use? Thanks for the help.

Andrew,
You have to scuff first. But if you do not have good thread coverage you will probably break through the finish and abrade the thread - a lot of fuzzies. Either leave it alone or be prepared to cut the fuzzies after the finish is cured ( and there will be a lot) and then give it another light coat.

I may just be lucky but I have recoated after 6 months without a problem, no scuffing at all. I would say in your case hit it with some scotch bright it wont remove as much as sand paper

Andrew,
I simply wipe down the guide with alchol and make sure that it is completly dry. This will insure that all of the dust is off the coating.
Recoat and you will be fine.
Take care

+1 - doesn't take but a second to do it and rough up the surface for better adhesion.

I made a spinning outfit back in December for my father for Xmas, because of the short notice and time to complete, I was only able to get one coating on the guides. Do I need to go back and put a second coating on the guides? The applications came out even and very good, do I need to scuff or will wiping down and reapplying a second coat be fine.

Jay,
If you are happy with the apperance of the finish, no need to add a second coat.
Generally speaking the only purpose of the finish is to coat the wraps, help the wraps adhere to the finish - and finally for appearance.
If the thread is well coated, the finish is smooth and to your liking leave it alone.

Many folks including myself will generally use only one coat of high build on their rods. If, and only if, there is an issue with a guide or two, will I go back and put a 2nd coat on a guide.

If you use the thin finishes, which really penetrate, you will normally have to put a 2nd coat on the rod to get a nice even finish.

Lots of different ways to finish a rod and they are all correct, as long as the builder of the rod and the user of the rod are happy with the results.

Take care
Roger
