HI EVERYONE,
NEWBIE QUESTION:EVERYTHING I HAVE SEEN PEOPLE USE THE SOLID GLUE STICK FOR SECURING THE TIP TOP.NOW I ALWAYS CARRY ASSORTED TIP TOPS AND THE GLUE STICK WHEN I AM FISHING IN CASE OF A TIP BREAK.WHY NOT USE A TWO PART EPOXY TO SECURE THE TIP TOP ON A NEW BUILD?

THANKS,
SCOTT

HMMMM. Good question. I would guess that it is because if you ever smashed a tip top without breaking the rod you could heat it up and pull it off without having to cut the blank. I'm just guessing though.

Scott, I use a 2 part epoxy for tip tops. I have had too many tops come lose during the hot summer down here in Texas when using the glue stick.

I always use 5 minute epoxy on my tip tops, new or otherwise, you can heat it up and take it off but you have to be extra careful.

Scott,
Here in the midwest, most of the folks that build heavier action rods like northern, flipping stick, Muskie and salt water rods always use epoxy to glue on the tips.
It is simple, quick, and very effective.

If you ever need to remove a tip that has been epoxied on, simply use a torch to heat the tip and the tip comes right off. The heat from the torch will soften the epoxy enough to allow for easy removal.
Be sure to avoid overheating the tip, because you don't want to weaken the blank tip itself.

I have never had a problem with ferrule cement not holding a tip top, but then, again, I don't leave my rods sitting in a hot car.

Hot sticks are great for an emergency. But the stick glue well come lose if it is hot. I use 15 minute Rod Bond. But not recommend any epoxy glue for at least 24 hours. I have never used the quick set stuff. So I can not comment on it

It takes the heat of a flame to melt the stuff. If it's that hot where I'm fishing, I've probably died, and not gone to heaven...

I was thinking of the heat in the truck where you hang the rod in a gun rack . You know it gets hot and steamy back there. LOL

I use 5 min. or 15min. epoxy for tips. I mix well and wait until the mix starts to tighten then apply.
If that tip needs to come off I gently run it over a flame(most of the time my stove burner) and I mean quick and light. I check frequently on the tips progress. Don't force anything and do not twist! Pull gently. If you force the issue you will get a exploded cigar end or damaged tip that needs to be cut.

When removing a candle works well. Direct flame. You can also put a paper clip on the top and then a strong rubber band attached to a hock of some sort. When you heat apply tension. Comes right off.

I use Bills method been doing it that way for years. Also do not stand in front of the tip. When th tip comes loose it will fly off the rod like it was shot out of a canon
