How to determine correct tip-top ID size?

Guys,

What is the best way to determine the proper tip-top size for the barrel ID? I am fixing some rods and I would like to purchase the correct tip-top. I measure the rods tip-top last night (used a caliper) and I obtained 0.085” as the measurement.

Thanks in advance.

Carlos,
Mud Hole sells a tip top gauge that measures OD of rod tip and ID of Tip Top:[www.mudhole.com]. Or, you can do as you've done. Make sure that you're taking the measurement about 1/2" down from the end. You want to order a TT that is just slightly larger than that. Using your measurement, I would order a 6/64 size tip top.

Personally I use the tip gauge, you can check blanks or tips with it. But for measuring, the tips are specified in 64ths for the tube size, so your measurement would be for a 5.5 tip. But you might want to look at also getting a 6 tip.

MIke's right. I made a mistake converting to the fraction.

Both the Fuji and the Pac Bay tip gauge work well. I use the Pac Bay...and I wouldn't be without it.

Guys,

I appreciate the feedback, is there a place where I can obtain a conversion chart?

Thanks,

Carlos

From Bingham Enterprises: [www.angelfire.com]
This doesn't have the "in-between" sizes (like the 5.5/64), but it should help. I'm so glad that the U.S. never adopted the metric system. This way my brain gets to do a lot more work LOL.

Carlos,

Tip tops are sized by 64th's of an inch, so just divide 1 by 64 (1 / 64=.015625) then divide that number into the size of the blank's tip.

Using your blank as an example:

Your blank tip measures .085 / .015625 = 5.44 64th's of an inch.

Rounding up to the next available tube size means that as Mike said, a 5.5 is the size tip that you want for your blank.
