Kinda hesitant to ask what may well be a real stupid question...but... is it at all possibe to use a fly reel seat on a spinning rod? I found a fly reel seat that I fell in love with on this valentines day, and must have it for a spin build...or is love fickle??? Re: Fly reel seats and spinning rod

If you look at the foot on your fly reels you'll see that they are completely different in size, shape and thickness. They are smaller than the reel foot on the spinning reels. Re: Fly reel seats and spinning rod

Absolutely possible, and usually pretty easy. I do it all the time. (And vice versa as well) Just make sure the foot of the reel fits the seat. Re: Fly reel seats and spinning rod

It is very likely that you will find it terribly uncomfortable depending on the diameter of the seat and the size of your hand.

Spencer and Tom bring up points that could save you some trouble. Just make sure your spinning reel will fit the hoods on the fly seat and that the seat is not so small in diameter that your hand will cramp during a long days fishing. If those two areas work out you will be okay, but do check just to make sure. Re: Fly reel seats and spinning rod

A nice alternative is to use the skeleton spin seat parts with a wooden insert. I would also check the foot size for the spinning reel you are using with the fly seats as they are generally much thicker.

I have a fly rod and the spinning reel fits easily. The butt end has cork on it and all the pictures I see seem to look as if all fly reel seats have a solid end at the butt. My concern is, if the spinning reel fits and the fly seat fits on the blank easy enough, will I be able to use it and still have a 12" butt grip,or, will,(or does) the fly seat have an opening at the butt end to enable me to mount it from the tip end?? The seat in question is the Mother of Pearl seat from Jann's. Thanks for the input Re: Fly reel seats and spinning rod

If the end cap isn't already glued on, you'll mount it by sliding it on from the tip end. I don't it's glued on but you could always call Jann's and ask.
