Blank building material

Back in Jan. I was at the Western Washington Sports show. While there I talked to a couple of rod sellers who were boasting a new fiber better than graphite used in most rods today. They would not say or tell what this new fiber was or if it was a mixture of graphite glass or cow dung.
Does anyone have an idea what these fibers are or is it just selling HIP for a dog and pony show

There is an improved version of carbon fiber that may prove to be excellent for rod making. It is just a little ways off yet, though.

There are also bio-fibers looming on the horizon and they'll surely make an impact over the next few years.

I can't say for sure, but my guess is that the fellows you spoke to were blowing a little smoke.

There was a M5 fiber that I believe was developed for defense stuff and either Dupont or Magellan Ind. were looking to produce it. It was to be stronger in compression and tension thenE or S glass or HS or HM carbon and not degrade in UV or high heat. It's supposed to be like a plastic type thread. I haven't heard much about it in a few years though.

Thanks. Along these lines what are the pros and cons of banks made of carrot type fibers? A while back the carrot rod was the rod of the future.

I would say a rod or anything made of a natural product like wheat, corn, soy, or carrots will or can break down.

Carbon and prototypes are already out. I've heard that blanks and finish rods will be out this summer. These are not USA manufacturers, though.

Two companies that I know of that will be releasing what they call "new carbon" rods next month, Ocean Tackle International and Black Hole. The rods are very thin diameter for their strength and also very light. There are videos/pictures of blanks that have a butt diameter of 0.600" and tip of 10/64ths which weigh 7-8oz. dead-lifting 100 pounds at a 45 degree angle. Pretty impressive.

But...if you get shipwrecked or lost at sea, at least you can eat your fishing rods to survive.

Keep in mind that at their base, they're all carbon.

Too much salt will make carrot harder to chew
