C. Boyd Pfeiffer

I’m not sure how many of you know the name “C. Boyd Pfeiffer.” If not, be advised that Boyd is easily the most prolific writer of all things related to tackle making and rod building in history. His 1974 book, Tackle Craft, along with the 1999 update, The Complete Book of Tackle Making, have probably introduced more people to the lure making and rod building crafts than any other publications. In addition he has penned countless tackle and rod making articles for numerous fishing publications over the past 50 years.

Boyd called me yesterday and asked me about the International Custom Rod Building Exposition. Strangely enough, Boyd was under the impression that custom rod building hit a peak in the mid 1980’s and then sort of died out, or at least fell off by a considerable degree. He was unaware that there are more folks building their own rods today than ever before. And he was pleasantly surprised that something like the Expo is taking place.

We had a nice chat and he said he was going to write a brief article about the Expo for his Examiner.com spot. He did so today. Perhaps we’ll see him there.

One of the best books I own is Boyd's "Bug Making." I hope he does make it to the Expo. I'd love to meet him.

Been making some wooden lures and plugs this winter-I'm staring at his "Complete Book of Tackle making" as I type. It's an amazing work-550 pages of great stuff with around 200 pages on rod building-all for $19.95. Glad to hear he's still involved.

Boyd's tackle making book was the inspiration for the first rod I ever built. His instructions were easy to follow and his writing left you with the feeling that you could get the job done with patience.

I own that book (Tackle Craft).. He was one of the pioneers.

In his intro to the rod building section, he says that rod building isn't at all difficult...just assembling components. He would be VERY surprised at the changes in the craft.

His section on the early weaving is also terrific. You should send him some pics of the weaving being done these days.

I hope he is at the show. I would LOVE to meet him.

He did an article on me in the late 1960's fishing for (and catching!) largemouth on Lake Gaston in North Carolina. I still have one of the pictures he took - framed it even. And his tackle craft book is excellent. Nice guy.
