Today I saw an old steel rod that appeared to be made with brass guides. The frame had what appeared to be red/amber glass type ring. The ring was thick but transparent. You could tell that the rod had been used alot. There was a little line wear in the ring but not as much as I thought. What was I looking at? Re: Old brass rod guides

Sounds to me like you're looking at some agatine guides. Brass frames and man made agate rings. Thomas F. Thornhill Re: Old brass rod guides

The shiny rings were either ruby or glass. Usually glass. Agate has more of a dull, milky coloration regardless of the color.

Is it possible the guides are just steel, but the entire rod was dipped in varnish? Sometimes varnished guides take on the color of brass depending on how old the finish is.
Just a thought... Walt Natzke Ripon, CA Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
