Looking for split grip (cork with gold checks) components for a surf rod, I will be using a 20mm reel seat and the center of the seat will be 29inches from the butt. the very bottom of the butt is 22.6mm.
I realize that I can search through a lot of lists from the mfgrs and put together what I need; but I was hoping someone might be able to point me toward one of our sponsors that is a little more familiar with split grips and stocks what is needed for larger rods. Thanks for any suggestions. Walt Davenport "Roadhouse Rods" Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/02/2010 05:36PM by Walt Davenport. Re: Split Grip for Surf Rod

Walt, I've done two 10" surf rods with split cork grips and all I did was order the longest and largest diameter pre-made cork gip I could get, cut to the length sizes needed for the butt grip, reel seat grip and fore grip, sanded the ends down to meet the blank neatly. For the butt you may not end up with a lot of cork, I protected the cork with five coats of Birchwood Casey Tru-oil and my customers have not had any problems. Re: Split Grip for Surf Rod

I agree with getting the largest cork rear grip you can find - I prefer the ones with a palm swell at the top - then cut it right behind where your hand will rest. Use the bottom part (where the butt cap fits) for the but of the rod and the top part up against the seat; both sanded to make the cut side taper the way you wish down to the blank. I would think a cork foregrip about the length of the piece below the seat would look good above the seat. I have done this numerous times with EVA, but never with cork.
