Grounding wires control dust

I completely grounded my rod wrapping setup and drying racks, and it seems to cut way down or even eliminate dust attraction to wet finish. My wrapping stands are wood with rollers, my drying stands are aluminum, and both slide in metal T-tracks. I connected grounding wires from the roller mounting bolts on the wrapping stands, and the base of the drying stands, to the bolts that slide in the tracks; the tracks were grounded to an outlet. There was no static buildup on the thread when I was wrapping, and the first finish came out nice and clean.

Tom,
This actually sounds like a very good idea.

As long as you open a thread like this, I wonder if it would be a good idea to have a static dust collector in some other part of your shop.

I do have a conventional tv on the back wall of the shop and I do find that I have to vacuum the dust from it from time to time. I expect that the voltage on the display does its share to attract the dust away from other parts of the shop. I don't watch it that much. More just a source of back ground noise - when all is quiet.

Take care
Roger

Bought one of these this weekend at the fishing show, simply run your hands over it a few times, develops negative charge and attracts dust like a magnet. Well enough that it will pull dust off of a surface with out even touching it.
Haven’t tried it yet to know how good it will be, but will be hanging it behind my wrapper to find out tomorrow.

That sounds interesting, and also makes me think about people in the electronics industry that use ESD (Electo-Static Control) shoes, grounding wrist straps, mats, etc. I wonder if using ESD products would reduce dust problems?
