One of the best aspects of attending the Expo is to be able to compare blanks firsthand. I'll be looking for a blank and components to build a Striper Surf Fly Rod in the 9 - 10 weight range.
In addition to the CTS REVO's I wonder which other blanks are best suited for the task. I have never fished the surf with a fly rod and wonder if it's wise to go longer than 9 feet to make it easier to mend line over the waves. All suggestions are greatly appreciated. Re: NE Surf Striper Fly Rod

As you move to longer and longer rods in that line weight category, you may find them very tiresome to cast and fish over a long day. This is just something you'll have to try and see for yourself.

The only advice that I could give, is that for back bays you can get away with a 7 or 8 wt if you wanted. For surf, some guys might go up to a 10 or 12 wt. I have 2 9' 9wt and if the wind is blowing I have a difficult time casting into the surf, granted casting ability has a huge impact as well, although there have been times where the fish were at your feet and i wish I had a fly rod. If I had to build another fly rod I might go with a 10' 10wt . my $.02

Thanks.
Tom: I understand your point. I am not sure if going 6 inches longer would add enough mending benefit to warrant the extra weight. Of course if it hurts my arm I don't want it. Tony: I was on Race Point at low tide while 40" stripers were within 20 feet of the shore. The wind was low and the bait fish were pressed against the steep drop off wall. You couldn't ask for more ideal circumstances for using a fly rod. A friend hooked, landed, measured and released a 42" fish in less than 2 minutes on a 9 foot 9 weight. I was hoping to hear specific blank suggestions but I will have a field day at the Expo finding them. Re: NE Surf Striper Fly Rod

i am building two fish creek rods for fishsticks as demo rods for the show. one is a 6wt and the other 8wt. you will be able to cast them and form your own opinion. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
