I am going to build my first surf rod. It will be a 10' Lamiglas International blank . It is 2 piece medium heavy. I will be using 20# mono. Casting weight is 2-4 ounces. The spool measures 63.5 mm. As I understand the first guide will be 30mm. Does this seem correct? Will I need 11 guides plus tiptop? Any suggestions on the guides I should use.
Thanks for your help up front. Rick Brixon Re: Building my first Surf Rod

I doubt you will need that many guides on you rod. If you've read the articles on guide numbers in RodMaker, you'll note that surf rods don't need that many guides. I'd say you can do it with about 7 plus a tiptop.
The size of your butt guide will be dictated by the line you use. Smaller and more supple line doesn't require a very large ring. Stiffer and larger diameter line tends to do better with a larger ring. With 20lb mono, the 30mm butt guide is a good place to begin. the reel is a spinning reel. Thanks Tom, I have the Issue you pointed out and am checking it out. This message board rocks. Everyone is so helpful and generous with their knowledge.
Thanks for the advice and guidance. Rick Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
