I' ve used gudebrod almost exclusively over the years and like it, but I see where many builders are switching to maderia. What does maderia offer that gudebrod doesn't? For those of ya'll that switched what made ya'll switch? Is maderia that much better of a thread or is it just the new kid that everyone wants to try? Re: maderia or gudebrod

over 450 poly colors tried it with two coats of CP came out great under trondak u-40..runs about 5.00 a spool for a 1000 meters and comes on a mini king spool..Looks like a 5000m spool just smaller alot nicer than the madeira spools. Re: maderia or gudebrod

definitly need CP on any poly threads. Madeira and Robinson Anton are high speed Embroidery machine thread and contain silicon to move through the machine with ease.. I can vouch for this as I use madiera and Robison Anton thread and get a nice build up of crud on the machines. Madiera is commonly sold as a rod builders thread but Madeira doesn't advertise it. It works there is alot of colors to choose from and as long as the right care is taken they come out looking beautiful on a rod. Maybe with enough community interest one of the thread companys will make a poly thread with no silicone. Re: maderia or gudebrod

It continues to blow my mind that professional rod builders continue to use non-NCP thread, especially Madeira. It's like we're moving backwards in technology. I know a lot of people like Madeira because of the color possibilities, but that's all the more reason to write Gudebrod, take action, and ask them to give the customer what they want! Take a look at all the decorations that use Madeira thread. A lot of them look awful, despite the technical work, and all of them would look better if they were done with NCP.
I know I'm going to get flamed for this, because a lot of big name rod builders use this thread heavily. Bottom line, there should be no reason to use CP on a modern rod, and when I take a close look at all the Madeira wraps, it looks like the pole was wrapped with cheap sewing thread. Keep using Gudebrod Craig. Re: maderia or gudebrod

Anthony, The NCP thread is fine if you want the wrap to look painted on. To each his own but many like the thread to show its texture and sparkle. Also wraps that are done in "non-NCP" need to be packed more perfectly to avoid blotching . NCP is a little more forgiving on the packing, therefor hiding the less that perfect thread work . I personally like the thread texture to show and have been using Maderia exclusively for decorative wraps. Gudebrod thread colors are blah and dont have enough shades to do a nice fade . As for getting Gudebrod to increase the colors selection good luck. It recently had been cut back. The rod building is a small pimple on their rear end of their business. As I stated to each his own. The Maderia can be had for about 1/10th the price of the gudebrod if you do your homework. Freddwhy (Rapt-Ryte) Re: maderia or gudebrod

I would direct you to Metro thread. A weight poly (C.P. needed), lots of beautiful colors, 1,100 yard spools, $0.75/each. I have been using this for a while with absolutely no problems. And at the price, you can afford to stock a LOT of colors. Re: maderia or gudebrod

In my opinion, NCP thread looks flat, dull and painted on. I still use Gudebrod with Madeira (sometimes in the same wrap) and always use the Nylon, never the NCP. I use CP 95% of the time Mike (Southgate, MI) If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!! Re: maderia or gudebrod

For those of us that like the more transparent look of no CP, it looks like we are stuck with one source Gudebrod. Re: maderia or gudebrod

Thanks for the replies. I have never used Cp on any rods I've made. I do have a 2oz bottle, but it has never been opened. I bought some fish hawk at last yeas expo and I liked it enough, I was taught using gudebrod and that is why I still use it as my "default thread". Just thought I would ask as it seems more and more folks are switching threads. I plan on doing some thread research at the expo. Re: maderia or gudebrod

I started out using Madeira, but now I have switched almost exclusively to Sulky Metallic. Some people would say to never use metallic for a main guide wrap, but I have been very successful once I got used to it. It produces beautiful bright wraps and I like not having to use color preserver since it saves a whole day on a build not having to wait for the color preserver to dry. I do wish they would offer more colors, but for most of my customers it is like pulling teeth to get them to use anything besides black anyway. Re: maderia or gudebrod

I'm with Scott on this.
Hands down my favorite to work with! Maybe not all the colors of some of the others, but I've found it much easier to wrap with. Probably have close to a couple hundred rolls of other brands and have all but stopped using them, unless I need a color I can’t find in the Fish Hawks. Can finish with or with out color preserver depending on the look you want. Re: maderia or gudebrod

TO each their own regarding the type of thread they use, and if they use CP or not. I personally willnever ever use CP on a guide wrap, I get awful results once the rod is used a couple of times. This prevents me from using MAdeira as a guide wrap. FOr Dec WRaps, MAdeira has been the top choice sinc eI started using it and converting everyone. If you come to the ICRBE stop by The NERBs booth and look at our wraps and you will see why that is what we use. Re: maderia or gudebrod

kirk, I have a rod with two rough years service of inshore salt water fishing . Has pulled up some 4 ft spiney dog fish, that is wrapped with Maderia and CP .Still looks good as new(I think, will have to look real close tonight). I dont see a problem. Freddwhy (Rapt-Ryte) Re: maderia or gudebrod

In reply to Mark Marshall, I use Metro thread and Like it just fine. Even better at the price. Had to make small adjustments in how I used it verses Gudebrod . [www.rodbuilding.org] Re: maderia or gudebrod
