I have seen a formula a few times in the past for figuring what weight fly rod a spinning or casting blank would translate to… but can’t find it now that I want it. …lol Can one of you refresh my memory on it? (or provide a link)
Thanks! Re: spin/cast blank to fly blank formula?

There is a formula, but you have to understand that it's only marginally correct because there are no standards for fly rods. In other words, one company's 4-weight rod is another company's 5-weight rod and another company's 3-weight rod.
But, if you want to try, take the line weight number and make that your numerator. Use 16 for the denominator. So if you're looking at a 4-weight fly rod you would have a blank that will supposedly cast well with 4/16ths (1/4) of an ounce. Going the other way, a spinning or casting rod with a mid-range casting weight of 1/4 ounce, should be capable of casting a 4-weight line at average distances. ........... I figured it wasn't exact, and since I didn't have any idea, it would be a good place to start.
if I wanted to use a casting blank to make a short (7'-8') flyrod for 8 wt line, I'd be looking for something rated to about 1/2 oz. as the middle of the stated lure weight range? Just making sure I follow correctly. Thanks again. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
