It has been a bit since we talked about tracking costs and profits on rod building. I have an excel speradsheet that could be helpful to anyone who needs some tracking costs, markup, and profit on rod building.
The spreadsheet is available to anyone on this forum who wants it. Just email me, and I will send it via email. I have even included an invoice that you can print out for your customer. It comes with direction page also. Very user friendly. Microsoft excel is required. kfg001@aol.com Kyle Robinson Edited 3 time(s). Last edit at 12/26/2009 12:47PM by Kyle Robinson. Sorry, I should not have put in the WWW on my email. Do not know what I was thinking about.
I have sent out about 25 copies so far. If you want one, and did not get one, let me know via email, i will send you one. After you read the directions, you can see how you will be able to customize the spreadsheet to your own needs. After the build, save a copy of this with your customers name, date for your records. Keeps all the specs organized. Then also save a copy under the blank MFR/blank#, this will help you in the future tracking your builds by the MFR. You can also save a copy under the length, action, power, and even the CCS data info for that specific blank. I have not added the CCS data to the spreadsheet, but it is an easy fix. I hope that it helps everyone! Happy Holidays! Kyle Robinson Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 12/26/2009 02:21PM by Kyle Robinson. Re: tracking rod building costs

A note regarding taxes, and FET.
There is a formula which calculates state sales tax. The cells are L51 cor 52 for the input data. Also for the FET. As you may know, if you buy and build, there is a FET to be paid by the purchaser. I won't get into that, because it is explained real thouroughly in the library section here. Tom and others have covered it a lot in the past also. But it is calculated here. You have the ability to change the tax, based on the selling amount of the rod. Kyle Robinson Re: tracking rod building costs

Spreadsheets are usually enough for many rod builders. I use a version as a bill of materials sheet and specs that I give out to each customer and keep a copy so I have a record of what was used in case I ever have to repair it in the future. It's come in handy for this and I use it to keep all my design notes etc on any special things recorded.
Another useful tool for record keeping is to use a simple financial software package like quickbooks. The advanced versions have inventory tracking functions that may or may not be useful, depending on what level of in-process inventory tracking you want to get into. It is good for standardizing invoices and tracking profits and expenses, as long as you are dilligent in entering all the info for expenses. These tools are key to keep good records if you are going to have a home or small business. Thanks Kyle for sharing this. Terry Re: tracking rod building costs

Thanks.
I made a quote/invoice form on excell but I didnt incorporate cost into the spreadsheet. This format takes one step out of my process of figuring cost, markup and adding it to the quote. Good job and thanks for sharing! Re: tracking rod building costs

This has been recieved very well. I am glad to see that it is working for you folks. I have sent out about 60 copies so far. This should give everyone the flexability to figure costs/profit in a fashon that is tailored to how they track specs and price their rod builds.
There are features that can help the pro builders, as well as the hobby builders. Any questions, let me know. Kyle Robinson Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
