New to rod building. I plan on building a 7' spinning , med/fast rod from St. Croix. My thread would be a type "A". What strenght of thread should I be using? I see there is several different break strength available. Re: Thread Strength

Strength of Gudebrod A threads - all are fine for rodbuilding
The strength of the HT is missleading - fine for trim/accent bands - stretch of inner core may cause problems on guide foot ramp on flexible blanks - tends to gap in time. A - REGULAR NYLON 2.7# 18.6#/in of wrap A - NCP 2.2# 18.6#/in of wrap A - HT METALLIC 3.5# 21.8#/in of wrap Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 12/08/2009 01:43PM by Bill Stevens. Re: Thread Strength

Thread strength is not an issue. Size A will be more than adequate in terms of strength for holding your guides to the blank.

Bill,
Not to stir the pot but I have been using HT metallic on rods up to salmon downrigger rods for years with no problems whatsoever Mike (Southgate, MI) If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!! Re: Thread Strength

I'll have to say I've had the same results as Mike. I've wrapped a lot of rods using HT metallic as a primary wrap and have never had a problem with separation or gaps later on. As to the wrapping itself, there is a learning curve and if wrapped too tight could be the reason for problems later? Re: Thread Strength

I've seen some pretty hefty rods wrapped in silk, so size A nylon should be fine for just about anything. I actally wish Gudebrod still had the "00" size available for use on smaller flyrods. I actually just wish they just offered the array of colors that they used to. Gudebrod threads seem to keep their "roundness" better when wrapping, more so than the other nylons I've used. that is the only brand I use. Don't need to remember if I have to use CP on one thread because of fish-eyes or not. I know I can do what ever I want with them. Bill - willierods.com Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
