MHX build question

I just put guides on a MHX SJ 842 spinning rod and after I static tested to get correct guide spacing the first guide from the reel was setting at a woppin 27 inches. The guide I used for this is a 16J Fuji
guide.[BYAG-16J] Does this sound like it will work? I also have a blvag16J guide but guide just made it worst. I guess what I'm looking for is a little input - anyway, thanks for your time Ken Re: MHX build question

Not enough information AND incomplete information.
27" inches from what? The rear, the front of the foregrip, the tip? What reel are you using? What is the spool diameter? While a Y16 might work for braid, it isn't likely to be as friendly with mono. Jim - Re: MHX build question

Hi Jim
The 27 inch distant is from the spool center of a shimano sedona 2000 to the first guide 16 byag. The spool size is almost 40 cm's.... Thanks Ken Re: MHX build question

Sounds like a very long way and with a very small guide. Have you tried casting it?

I think it is safe to say that you messed up something in your calculations.
I just checked a SJ720 that I finished over the holidays and the distance from the top of the spool (Sedona 1000 @39mm) to the face of the butt guide (BYAG25) is 21". I can safely say that the rod is properly setup since I can cast 1/4 ounce to 100+ feet with 6# monofilament. I suggest reading the 27X article again and restarting from scratch. sounds like I did mess up somewhere. I knew that something just wasn't right.
I,ll start from square one and try again Ken Re: MHX build question

That has to be my favorite blank! I have built more of those this month than all others.
Try this Shimano Stradic 2k dia. 4.5cm x27=121.5cm (47.8inches) Location for smallest guide Measured the distance(top of spool) to my size 30 butt guide= 21.5 inches Also I seem to have the best luck with this setup (using 10 or 15 lb braid passing knot to 30lb flouro) BYAG 30,BYAG 16, BYAG10, BYAG8L,BLAG 7(x4) Edited 2 time(s). I saw test cast it and see what you think.
In all honesty, if it casts well then there is nothing wrong with that distance or guide size. Contrary to popular believe, if you're happy with the performance then what does it matter if it falls within a someone's thought process. Re: MHX build question

The thing you are going to need to watch for is line slap on the blank. I just built a pair of those and assuming I can remember corretly, they are 21-22" from the top of the spool with size 25 butt guides. I can't measure them because they were just shipped out. It very well may work, but I remember backing up a little from where my initial position for the line slap reason. Re: MHX build question

Most rods with that size reel are going to have the butt guide located from roughly 19 to 23 inches from the face of the spool.

What are the general guidelines for convential reels? The whole 27X and NGC method has made spinning rods easy. I feel like I am going by looks and don't have sound plan for butt size and location on conventional reels. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
