Does anyone know what method a factory uses to apply color to a blank? I have done a search and found a ton of info on subject but could not find this answer. How hard is it to duplicate that process? Re: factory blank color?

The factories use an automotive type paint, they have a small box with the paint in it, with a piece of latex over the end, then they pull the blank through it, hang to dry or bake to dry.
It is not worth the time to do this for one blank, if your going to do lots of blanks then go for it. Lamiglas has special order blank colors, if you just want one blank. Re: factory blank color?

I have done something very similar to what Joe describes using a short section of PVC pipe with latex covering the bottom. Results were pretty good and I intend to continue to "practice" to make perfect.
The one thing I would recommend is that you NOT try it with Permagloss. It eats latex! Ask me how I know... Walt Re: factory blank color?

I am looking to do about 100 blanks. Just went and bought some paint in a can that is made for automotive vinyl. It is suppose to flex very well. Sprayed the blank twice and then covered with some poly. Did not turn out just like I wanted it to. I want to try a pvc pipe but dont know what kind of paint to buy. The paint store tells me that the autopaint will probably flex off the first time that i bend the rod. Anyone know exactly what brand of paint I need to buy. I am going with a white paint. Thanks; Re: factory blank color?

I do not have experience with Auto paint, but as I recall from previous posts on the subject, the correct paint is that which is formulated for the plastic components like the bumper. You should probably use the search function and see what you can find in the archives. There is a TON of info there about painting blanks, not much new ground to plow.

Im very new to rod building but has anyone tried awlgrip. We use it on most of the boats built here on the outer banks so im sure it will flex. When the left over paint dries in the bucket its like rubber. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
