Proper guide sizing?

Hey guys, I'm building on a Lamiglas MB90-1F blank, trying to get a catfish rod that will give me a good long cast with a 1oz chunk of liver. My question is selecting the proper size guides for this blank. The manufacturer recomends sizes 6,6,6,6,7,7,7,8,8,10,12. the blank is 7'6", and I will be using a 12 to 15 pound weight mono line. I need to know if this sounds correct to you guys. It just seems to me that the guides are on the small side for what I'm trying to acheve. Wont these small guides restrict my casting distance? Far from too large ... you can actually go much smaller with the running guides. Re: Proper guide sizing?

I just built a Rainshadow RCLB70ML E-Glass Blend Cat Rod and used 10,8,6,and running 5's. If you are not passing any knots through the guides you can go even smaller than that. It will cast about a half mile and then throw rocks for 5 minutes, as my grandfather used to say about his shotgun. J.B.Hunt Bowling Green, KY Re: Proper guide sizing?

Not too small at all but you can get by with fewer sizes. I think that sort of thing has become obsolete with more modern rod building thinking. I would try something like 6-6-6-6-6-6-6-6-6-10-12. Saves a little weight and gets the job done even better. Re: Proper guide sizing?

Kipp,
If you were to build this as a spiral wrap, you could likely go down to about 8 guides. Take care Roger Re: Proper guide sizing?

You guys are great teachers, I think I'm going to have one awesome rod when I'm done, or I guess I should say when we are done. Thanks once again. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
