I am going to build a rod with ohio state colors, scarlet and grey.I have read on this forum that white will turn translucent when you apply finish and a dark blank will make the white not be as white as it could have been if one would have first painted or otherwise colored the area where the white thead is used.I have never used white or grey.My question is,will grey thread act like white, being a light color?Should i apply some paint to areas where i plan to use grey thread?
Thanks in advance for your advice..............Scott Re: thread question

A light grey (as in the ohio State grey) will respond the same as white when finish is applied. The color of the a dark blank or underwrap will bleed through on all light colors: yellow, white, pale greens and blues, etc. Re: thread question

Do you plan on using color preserver? The difference with and without CP is dramatic! Even with CP a dark blank will influence the shading of light colored thread. If you have doubts......experiment. You can do this on the portion of the blank that will eventually be under the grip or reel seat/ Re: thread question

Light grey in NCP thread will not bleed thru. I just finished wrapping a dark green blank with lite and dark grey. The feather inlay is on lite grey and has absolutely
no signs of any bleed thru. Send me your e-mail address and I will send you a picture. Ron aka Rons Custom Tackle Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 11/16/2009 01:02AM by Ron Weber. Re: thread question

Scott
I have built a couple of rods in Penn State (boo-hoo) colors - blue & white. The only way I could get the white to stay white was by using white ncp thread and then using 2 coats of color preserver over it.. The white color was used for narrow trim bands only (and the blue (regular nylon) was the main wrap color).Consider grey ncp thread with a couple of coats of cp. Well......there's next year to look forward to! Rog Re: thread question
