I would look at a Hot Shot blank rated for casting 3/8th to 5/8th ounce. No more than 3/4 ounce at the outside. I'm assuming you plan to cast shorter distances and are primarily interested in fish fighting power.

Joe,
Couple of options.
Cabela's 8 foot 5 weight traditional 2 will cast an 8 weight line easily.
Could reduce butt 6 inches. Was on sale recently.
or
IM7 spinning or casting blank with a butt dia of .300 / .340 and a tip of 4/64 in 7 foot length

When the situation calls for it, such rods are necessary for fighting power. Casting is not generally the priority in these situations.
