Reel Seat question

Howdy All,

Strange question for you all . I am working on getting things together for my second Rod build . This one is going to be a spincast/baitcat rod. My question is can I go with a reel seat just a bit bigger then the blank size anddo away with the arbor / bushings and if so will it improve the sensitivity any ? Pro's and Con's of going with with a reel seat epoxied straight on the blank would be helpful.

Thank you in advance ,
Heath

Heath,
You will be very hard pressed to see any difference at all - whether the reel seat is epoxied directly to the blank, or if you use a poly arbor properly reamed to fit the blank and then glued on the blank and onto the seat.

Good luck
Roger

p.s.
Use a reel seat that is correct for the application, that fits both the reel that is going to be used, and the size of the hand that is going to be using the rod. Arbor out the seat as necessary for a good fit.

Howdy Roger,

Thank you for your advice. The Rod is actually going to be a gift to my sister for her Birthday and will probally beused with a Zebco 202 or 404 . Just can't get her away from eitherof them reels and into the new age of reels LOL . Since her favorite color is Pink I will be using using a Mud Hole 6' medium blank and thinking along the line of using American Tackle casting guides Holo / Tich and tip top to match with American Tackle exposed blank Hologracraphic reel seat with a Inside Diameter of .394" and the Blank I am going to use has a outside diameter of .425" . I haven't really decided on the grip that I will use yet weither it will be EVA or Cork . Sorry for not posting all of this before . Not sure if this setup will work or not .

Thanks in Advance ,
Heath

The ideal reel seat is the one that fits you or your customer's hand. If you read the article in RodMaker on grip and seat ergonomics, you know that most reel seats are generally too small for most fishermen's hands. A seat that is too small requires more effort to hold and more effort to control in a fish fight. Just something to consider.

In terms of sensitivity, you lose a little each time you add additional parts and pieces. But in a practical sense the difference between a seat bonded directly to the blank and one bonded to arbors that are bonded to the blank isn't enough that the human hand could tell the difference.
