I'm getting back into rod building after many years. Lots of new stuff to learn on the intarwebs.

I am building a casting rod for steelhead fishing. I plan to do a spiral wrap on this rod. I am generally familiar with the spiral wrap concept.

I have read reference to the "simple spiral" and the "O'Quinn spiral", among others. I did not find any description of the differences in these wraps. Can someone shed some light on this subject, or point me in the right direction? Thank you.

See if you can get your hands on a copy of the Rodmaker special edition "Guides." I too had questions like yours, and they were all answered in an article on spiral wraps in the Special Edition. That one article by itself made the special edition CD worth its cover price.

There are no less than 6 specifically different spiral wraps. There are others, but they are mainly variations on these. Many of these spiral wrap types are explained in the Glossary here (click the button near the top of the forum panel). Those that aren't are covered in RodMaker articles and on the Special Edition #1 CD.

Tom, which ones would you look at first for an offshore boat rod? Say a 4/0, 30# class trolling outfit.

They all work. I have done such rods with the Simple Spiral and the Revolver/Roberts type and both have worked well.
