I just read in a different thread where there will be an article in future RM reference examining and determining why/how a blank failed. "blank failure - the causes and how to recognize them from visual inspection. " What a great idea! 9 out of 10 customers that bring in a broken custom rod are honest with how it happened. But its that 10th one, the one that is sure that it was a defective blank even though the blank is 5 years old and pitted from all the in-line sinkers bouncing off of it as he drives down the road, that drives me nuts. At last, I can reference published material from a respected trade publication when I tell him it was "operator error, or abuse" was the reason the rod broke.
I am always accommodating to my customers but it will be nice to be able to explain how I came up with reason as to why his rod broke. Buzz Re: blank failure, new article

I would like to say that no blanks were harmed in the preparation of that article. Alas, I cannot - 42 first quality blanks met their demise during the photo sessions for the article.

Buzz the material in the article will be quite useful prior to the sale as well. After the fact the business policies of others takes control and explanations will typically fall on deaf ears for that 10th guy you describe who only hears the all inclusive warranty replacement. It may be best if he takes a condensed version of the article with him upon delivery of the rod if that is approved by Rodmaker. Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 10/01/2009 02:59PM by Bill Stevens. Doors, trunks, and ceiling fans have been my biggest cause of "defective blanks"...rofl! Tom, I do hope you included those tests.
Sad times when so many consider it a God given right to be protected from the consquences of their own actions. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
