OK, this is off topic but somewhat relevant as it relates to fishing and PG.
I'm wondering if PG can be used to coat Polyethylene watercrafts such as sit on top kayaks. These things are often dragged on shore and get lots of scratches at the bottom. I thought about using some clear 3m protedctiive sheets that are used by some to clear coat the front of cars. The curves on the kayaks make it difficult to conform. So my thought turned to Permagloss - clear, tough, and renewable each year as it wears. Any reason this is inadvisable ? Or would this work? Thanks for humoring me....:) Tom, feel free to delete this thread if it is too far OT. Thanks, Mo Re: Off Topic: Permagloss as coating for kayaks?

I have a quite a few kayaks and can tell you that nothing, not even PG, is going to protect them from scratches and tears from frequent encounters with rocks and rubble.
Not only that, but you're going to have a hard time getting any sort of coating to stick to the plastic used in most roto-molded kayak hulls. ................. Re: Off Topic: Permagloss as coating for kayaks?

What about an auto polyurethane for that. Have a talk to an auto supply dealer that sells auto paint supplies in your area. Bill - willierods.com Re: Off Topic: Permagloss as coating for kayaks?

Mo -
Probably better off with marine-grade poly. Easier to apply and cheaper by far - but you're probably going to have to do some prep work on the hull Re: Off Topic: Permagloss as coating for kayaks?

Mo......
As mentioned.....adhesion and flexibility will be problems to overcome. Spray on truck bed liner came to mind as a relatively inexpensive product to try,,,,,,,comes in colors...recoating as necessary wouldn't be much trouble. I believe it is polyurethane... the spray on has a lower grit level than the brush on. Chris Re: Off Topic: Permagloss as coating for kayaks?

Mo,
I use a Polyethylene kayak on a regular basis. I have to agree with Tom that nothing will prevent scratches and tears in that material. The good news is Polyethylene kayaks are remarkably think and can can an enormouse amount of abuse. Cosmetically, I think there is little you can do to keep the kayak from having scratches and tears. Functionally, you do have choices. I use a thin epoxy intended for layering fiberglass or kevar sheets and attached a 2 inch wide kevlar cloth to the keels of my kayak and canoe. The resulting patch is both protective and durable. Make sure you sand the Polyethylene before you epoxy the kevlar patch to the surface. I got the kevlar cloth strip from @#$%& and the layering epoxy from West Marine. I hope this helps Rick Re: Off Topic: Permagloss as coating for kayaks?

Hard knocks sometimes cause blisters on my stripper canoe. Instead of cutting out the blister and patching, I have been using syringes to inject the PG into the blister. Certainly faster, certainly less scare left. No issues, so I am thinking it works for at least for this kind of work! Pesco Ergo Sum Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
