A fisherman buys several rods (all the same specs) from a relatively new rod manufacture, (we will not memtion the brand name). He takes the rods to a bass tournament some where on Kentucky Lake during a rather warm day this summer.

During the day he picks up the rod and makes a cast. Something is wrong. He looks at the rod and 3 or 4 guides are out of line, twisted. He has the same spec rod in his rod locker. He takes it out of the rod box and places the twisted rod in the locker. He places the second rod on the casting deck and continues fishing. The second rod does the same thing, the guides move and twist.

He loads his boat at the end of the tournament and looks at the rod in the locker. The guides are straight and back to normal.

Time passes.

He takes the rods back to the sporting goods store where he purchased the rods. Not a big box store but a large store for this area. He wants his money back. The manager says no way. The fisherman tells the manager to put the rods in the back of his pick up truck and see what happens. The manager does just that. Both rods twisted. The manager gives the fisherman his money back and packages up all the rods on his rack and sends them back to the manufacture.

I have never seen any rod react in this way.

The Bio mass was reaching for the sun?? Possibly the bright orange had something to do with it?

After reading the original post I suspect a solution to this new task specific Whacky Throw Rod will be proposed that all fishermen take their rods to a chiropractor for a spine adjustment! If the store manager is talking about removing production rods that twist under load for the shelves I hope he has a large gun department!

There is a chance that the blanks were not kept in the oven long enough, or that the oven temperature never reached the required level. It's also possible that a problem existed with the resin in the prepeg. However, this would also tend to result in rods that failed in use.

I would find it hard to believe that a rod that is turning or twisting due to heat from the back of an open pickup truck bed still retains adequate strength when used in a fishing situation.

Fellas to the best of my knowledge this post is as close as second hand info can be. It seems that when the blank go hot it deflected

I have seen this happen on blanks that were not cured properly but they typically didn't return to the original state after being removed from the heat or sun.

Second hand info generally tends to leave out some important details. I think we can all assume that we don't have enough here to go on.

The truck emission system do warm up the bed of the truck.

I do not think it is an adhesive problem. The adhesives that are in the prepreg materials used are called thermoset. This means once the adhesive is heated to the flow temperature it can not be reheated and reformed. A thermoplastic adhesive such as hot melt sticks can be reheated and reformed.
Whoever the rod company they would know immediately if there was a resin problem as soon as the shrink tape was removed from the blank. The adhesive in a blank does not add to the overall strength to a rod, all it does is hold the fibers of the material in alignment. Adhesives don't do work, they distribute work.

This sounds like "urban legend" and one for the "Mythbusters"

The most I could get out of the tale was the rods deflected and twisted. You know how second hand rumors go. That's why I did not mention the manufactures name. On to better things.
