Just curious what many would consider their favorite multi piece travel/packable fly rod blank, around 8.5 ft. I've built on the Forecast 5 wt. 5 piece blank but would prefer a faster rod. As always, thank you for your suggestions. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/23/2009 11:17AM by Rob Grider. Re: Your favorite multi piece packable fly rod blank

I bought a 5 piece 9' 6wt AmTak pack rod from Gremlin Fishing. The owner of Gremlin fishing is friends with Joe from AmTak. I guess you can now purchase the same 5 piece travel blank. I love it and it's plenty fast, easily casts all 30 meters of my 6wt line. That was before my rod building days....I've got a 4pc 8wt yet to be built. IMO, if money isn't an issue ... St Croix SC5. For a super blank at a lower price ... Lamiglas XMG. Re: Your favorite multi piece packable fly rod blank

Forecast 8.6", 4 pc 3 wt extra fast, built light, its a rocket. I have built 4 so far and everybody who fishes one, tells a friend, who then gets me to build one for them. Its a touch fast for me as I learned how to cast with a 9" fiberglass 8 wt major rod with a jar of peaches under my armpit but for a fast light, responsive rod they are nice. not pretty but can be dressed well. I am building them with single foot guides and as light as I can keep them. Re: Your favorite multi piece packable fly rod blank

I blew a giftcard on a Cabelas 5wt 8'6" 7 piece - the stowaway 7. After a season of fishing I'm really impressed with the rod. I would call it medium fast to fast action, and it is a bit of a cannon. Plenty of backbone in this guy, and the blank was dirt cheap (about 50 dollars).
These are not listed on the website anymore, but as of the end of July you could still get them if you called the special order number. The stowaway 5 is still listed, but it seems to be a bit slower blank, and probably closer to the forecast you already built. Plus, it's nice having a rod tube that is less than 18".
