Surf Rod Help

A customer has brought me a 1 pc - 11' Lamiglas Custom Surf Rod and is requesting that I make it into a two piece rod.

1. Where is the optimum point on the rod to make the cut?

2. Should I use a metal or fiberglass ferrule?

If it were me, I'd ask what is the longest single section he can transport and try to make the cut below the 1/2 point, if that suits him. Say, a 4 foot butt and 7 foot tip.

Always get the ferrule first and then make the cut to fit the ferrule, not the other way around.

A shop made glass ferrule will be lighter but will require more labor. A metal ferrule is the most economical way to go and if you can locate it back down in the lower 1/2 of the rod, the weight won't be quite as noticeable.
