St. Croix Telescoping rod questions

I would like to know if anyone has made one and how it works? How short is it when collasped? Can you make a spinning or spin casting rod out of it? Is it durable and solid when extended? Strange they make it with the high grade SCIV, I would think it would be better with standard graphite. Any info or opinions would be appreciated. BillyR P.S this is the 4S80 MLF I'm looking at. Thanks.

Most telescoping rods are for flipping and pitching at least in the bass fishing world and are like that so they will collapse and fit in the rod locker on the boat. You usually have would say at least a 4 inch overlap in the two parts of the blank. The butt end of the main part of the blank will slide down all the way to the very butt of the rod, so the length of the main part of the blank is how long the rod will be collapsed. The blank is designed with this so it is very durable and you will not have any problems with it. As far as maiking it casting or spinning, the blank itself does not care which way you make it. You just need to make sure the blank meets the requirements you need in a rod.

I bought the same blank on sale and am thinking about how to build it. I was thinking of making it a casting rod for crankbaits or trolling CD-9's and slashbaits for walleye and wiper.

I'm already considering how the butt guide will restrict the telescoping portion and want to make allowances for that. I haven't done the guide spacing yet but I am anticipating what I will see.

The blank is a bit 'whippy' for my taste, but it may be just the thing for trolling.

Ive never built one but i have seen them. The one i saw the butt section was around 16" and was about about 10" shorter with the main section slid into the butt.
