Hello
I am fairly new to rod engineering. I have put together a variety of rods to fish locally in Michigan. My sister who lives in Houston would like me to build a rod for her husband that he would use in the salt flats fishing red fish. What size and blank characteristics would I want to look for for a rod for this use? Re: Salt Blank

IMO, the best all purpose selection for inshore flats fishing is a 7'0", 8-17# popping rod. Something along the lines of a G Loomis P844-GL2 or a Lamiglas IMP844 would be a perfect choice. For value, it is hard to beat a set of Fuji Alconite guides (black frames hold up better in salt) and a Fuji graphite reel seat (brushed stainless holds up better in salt). Re: Salt Blank

I would definitely take a look at Batson/Rainshadow blanks. You didn't specify spinning or baitcasting. The Batson IP843 is a popular blank around the Houston/Galveston Bay system. I prefer the 844 only because it gives you just alittle bit more lead in your pencil. Sometimes that can be a comfort when fishing around jack crevalle. To say that they can be stubborn on light tackle is an understatement. Regardless, 843,44,45 are all good calls for fishing this area . The Swampland boyz can get you lined up with Castaway components. Another good choice....good luck Re: Salt Blank

I think he'd be pleased with either of these blanks but I'm a l;ittle biased to the Lamiglass blanks. Re: Salt Blank

Thanks everyone, I recently built a Lamiglas casting rod fpr a friend and he loved it. I will do a little research and make a informed decision now, thanks again.

Check out the Lamiglass clearance blanks at Mudhole. I got a nice deal on a 7' 6" popping rod and its in 3 pieces so he can fit it in his trunk. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
