snake skin under guides

Got a quick......elementary question...

I am putting snake skin under double footed casting guides on a surf rod. Do most use in skin as a entire underwrap or just enough skin to see under the guide ring and then underwrap the feet with thread?????

Any color suggestions on rattle snake skin???? thanks!!!!!!

On double-footed guides, I use the snake skin between the feet (under the ring) where it can be seen. I wrap up to the skin from both ends with thread, providing a cushion for the guide feet. I suppose you could do a complete underwrap in snake skin, but you will be covering it with the guide feet and the thread to hold the guides in place, so why waste expensive skin?

Guide wrap color would of course be somewhat dependent upon the blank color, and really boils down to individual taste. I have used two-tone black/silver and black/white thread with good results.

I think rattlesnake looks good with regular old Gudebrod brown, with or without CP, and gold. Gold looks good with brown. A fade from dark to light brown would look very nice, too.

Have you made a thread color stick? I used a dowel and wrapped about twelve different colors, one with and one without color preserver. Then I can hold the dowel next to the blank to get a good idea of color.

Just a thought.

For rattlesnake any kind of earthy color would look pretty nice, I would imagine.

Thanks for the replies....... yeah i thought underwrapping with all skin would be a waste at $2.50/inch.. so i just did under the guide...and will use thread for the feet...

The idea for different colors on a dowel isgreat....will do......
thanks
