Is there any good reason for rings on guides to be tilted to the blank instead of straight to it.
Would seem to me it would make the ring ID smaller.

If it's tilted far enough it certainly could, although this would only be a problem with the very smallest of guides.

I think that actually there is.
Picture this - put a good flex n the rod, as if you are fighting a fish.
Take a look at the relationship of the tilted guide to the line.

I think that with the typical bends that most guides have - the face of the guide ring will be at about 90 degrees to the rod, when the rod is being stressed.
So, essentially, this would give the biggest overall hole to the line and give you the maximum function of the guide, with it essentially being pulled straight down from the blank.

Considering that - I was just wrapping some rods yesterday with some pretty small guides. In the batch, there were about 3 of the guides did have too much bend on the guide foot. i.e. they were bent at nearly 20 degrees to the blank. So, before using these particular guides, I bent them back to align them with the rest of the guides.
Whether they were never bent correctly, or whether they were bent in handling and shipment - who knows. I simply set the angle to be the same as the rest of the guides on the rod.

What does overall hole size matter when a blank is loaded provided it's big enough for the line to go through? The line isn't bouncing around at that point like on a cast... it's more static in that it's going to be pressed against the guide ring in the direction the load is coming from.

I just loaded a rod using batson micros - which have a pronounced "tilt". The tilt is the same when loaded. Don't understand what you are saying there.

If you tilt the ring far enough, it will pinch the line top and bottom. I have seen this happen with pear tops on fly rods that were bent. As mentioned earlier, this isn't a problem unless the ring is very small, such as with the micro sized guides. And it does require a pretty serious bend or tilt.

I was reading the post on the New Fuji Guides and it said they have a tilt to them. I see not reason for it, and thinking like Tom it would seem to -pinch- the line and possibly grab any knots. Have not heard any -good- reason for the tilt ??

It won't pinch the line unless the amount of tilt or bend is excessive. Bend one over to 45 degrees and beyond and you may have a problem. Less than that and it's not going to interfere with anything.

I would guess that it is a style and marketing thing.
The angled guides that I have been using recently, do actually give a bit cleaner look to the rod.

The tilt would be something recommended to the customer or dictated by the customer. Its possible that the customer wants them tilted at an angle and some straight up and down. Just use Toms advice when explaining it to the customer. Thats why its call a custom rod.

I find the tilt very useful. It enhances my ability to shake off line that has wrapped the tip section due to direct briad to leader knots without any swivel and very light lure presentations that result in loose line when working them lures and the effects of line twist
