Fibreglass and rod epoxy

G'day folks
I want to use a 30 inch section of graphite composite blank (offcut from a broken 700ML tuna blank) as an extention for another blank. The blank fits inside this piece. I reinforced the over the overlap with multiple layers of wraps but it still split under heavy load. I am wondering if I would be able to build up the overlap area with fibre glass strip about 3 inches wide. Has anyone tried to lay fibreglass with any of the rod epoxies like finish or assembly types? I tired a 2pc alloy reel seat to produce the join but under heavy load the blank proper sheared off at the lip of the ferrule section! This tells me I need some flex in the area, hence why I am looking at glassing it up Re: Fibreglass and rod epoxy

First the extension should be - over - the original blank or rod. 30 inches is a lot. Since it keeps breaking, get the proper size blank for what you are doing. use the shorter blank for some thing else. Lighter use maybe, scrap.

Bill, playing is good fun!
Only this blank as the tip properties that I want and its too short. I have been able to test a very good join but I want to try another route if possible. I have the feeling that reinforcing the 3inch female overlap with a few layers of glass might do the trick, just wondering on the use of rod style epoxy on glass sheets instead of using the proper laminating resin Re: Fibreglass and rod epoxy

Rod building epoxy may not properly wet out the glass cloth. The standard polyester resin is likely better for that.
Or, you could consult any of the companies that make glass and resin systems for boat construction and see what they advise. ........... Re: Fibreglass and rod epoxy

Rohit,
With 3" wide of fibre glass for stress, I would look into using Teflon Glass Fibre. Good Luck Ben Re: Fibreglass and rod epoxy

Also in the Auto Body system when doing fiberglass as on corvettes. There resin is thin and wet very well. Bill - willierods.com Re: Fibreglass and rod epoxy

Rohit,
Bill is right on. Find a rod blank with a butt section that would give you a 6 inch overlap on the butt of your current rod. If you then slip your current blank, up the inside of this blank for a tight fit, a thin layer of 5 minute epoxy will give a very strong joint. Since the blank will continue to increase in diameter than your current butt section, you will have 0 issues with the butt shearing off. i.e. the butt section will be much stronger than any part of your current blank. Take care Roger Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
