Another question for you all. First, let me start out by saying that I have never built a rod other than a one piece and I am not familiar with 2 or more piece rods builds. I have also only repaired 2 broken rods (both one piece)

I have a fly rod in my shop that needs to be repaired and I am unsure where to begin. The rod broke about 2.5 inches from the female end of piece # 2 (excuse my terminology). If I repair it using a shim and sleeve the butt piece will not be able to mate into the second piece.

All suggestions welcomed and I can send some pics if needed.

An over-sleeve is all you need. That should not interfere with the mating of the two sections.

The sleeve will need to be flexible enough so that the rod is not made overly stiff in that area, which could cause a failure at either end of the sleeve.

Something else I should have mentioned. The break is right at the first guide. I guess I would need to either move the guide or position on top of the sleeve?

I think I see where you are coming from; but need a bit more information.
How many pieces is this fly rod if it is unbroken? i.e. 1, 2, 3 or 4 pieces).

You indicate that you have a rod that is broken 2.5 inches from the female portion of piece #2.
From that statement, I assume that your break is in the butt section of the rod that contains the reel?

I also assume that the butt section of the rod normally fits "inside the butt section of piece #2?

If all of the above is true - yes, you do have a problem.

For a good repair, you need about a 2 inch overlap on the blank. \

I also assume that these rods use about a 2 inch overlap, when assembled.
If this is the case, the broken piece of the rod protrudes from the end of piece #2?


I think that the only reasonable way to fix this rod is to find another rod section of similar characteristics as the butt section of the rod being repaired. Find a section of the blank, which will duplicate the size of the blank that is inserted into the #2 piece.
You now have a stick extending toward the butt section.

If you have a long enough piece that matches your current butt section, you can put a new handle and reel seat on the rod and it will be like new.

Otherwise, you can go back about a foot, and chop of the piece and then use a tube within a tube, as well as an over tube - on your current butt section, which you have trimmed to match - put guide #1 back on and you will be good to go.

But, if I read your original post correctly, you are right. You can not use your current rod pieces to effect a repair, because the repaired section would not fit into the 2nd rod section.
