Look at the St. Croix Legend Elite 9' 8wt 4 piece. Great performance, beautiful blue blank and moderately priced.

Sante,
If he is an experianced CA fly fisherman I guess he know what he is doing - but an 8wt in the surf is kind of light. I have built rods for the CA fishermen in #9 to be overlined with a #10 line. I would say a #9 is the minimum with a #10 being what he really needs.

But, no matter what you build you have to take a look at the CTS new line of Affinity-X blanks. I just finished some in #9 and #10. I think that they blow all others away.

Check out the Mudhole closeouts on Lamiglass. They have the older 9wt XMG 4 piece 9" Lamiglass on clearance. I've got one and I'm building it right now. It is the exact equal to my old Thomas & Thomas Horizon 8wt in my "pulling" contest so it should handle 9 weight line just fine. I use 9wt on my T&T. Very good deal on a blank.
