Greetings from Alaska!
Since I am a newbie to the spiral wrap concept, I have two questions; 1. Should I read the threads on spiral wraps and guide placement then apply them to the 13 foot rod I want to build, or 2. Should I wait back for special suggestions from the folks that know? Anyways, thanks in advance! Paul Re: 13 foot casting rod spiral wrap guide spacing

I think you should read more than just "threads" discussing the subjuect posted on this or any other forum. I think you should at least read the article on static guide placement in the Library section (see link above), place the guides as if you were making a "guides on top" casting rod. Then without changing the spacing flip them all except for the butt guide to the bottom side of the blank and place a small DF low profile guide at 90 halfway between the butt guide & the first 180. For long distance casting on surf type rods, many guys prefer the O'Quinn Spiral. Just something else to look at.

Thanks you guys-much appreciated. I think I'll read-up and get more edumacated on the concept. It's a St Croix 6-10# blank. And, I believe it's from the AVID series-but may be mistaken.
Thanks again, Paul Re: 13 foot casting rod spiral wrap guide spacing

If you can Paul,
Get the "special" RMM issue on CD. It is devoted entirely on guide sizes, selection, & placement for many rod types and also has tips & set-up info for the popular spiral guide configurations such as the one Tom mentions above. Really a "must have" IMHO even if you have all of the RMM articles previously published about the subject of guides & placement. Paul, awhile back I built a 3 pc float rod from a 13" Talon blank using Recoils - I used your suggestion and used a spinning guide as a tip top. Since I couldn't cast a pin worth a darn, I contacted Talon and got another butt section for a song which I built as a spiral wrap to use with my Daiwa Luna reel - and used the existing 2 sections from the float rod with it. All of my recent spirals use double foot extra-low profile boat guides for the butt and transition guides. I don't follow the prescribed spiral procedure since I static test all of the running guides from the tip first and then set the butt and tranistion guides based on a good "fish-fighting" flex in the blank. When I cast this 13 footer, sometimes I need binoculars to see the splash! Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 07/12/2009 11:05AM by Tim Collins. Re: 13 foot casting rod spiral wrap guide spacing

TIM...
Great to hear from ya. Thanks very much for the input. I will definitely take your advice-it sounds like it will help dramatically, as I am cluless on this subject. Casting a pin takes some practice doesn't it...LOL. Also, I think I will static-test this rod....I knwo I should be doiung more of this, but hearing your suggestion just hammered it home for me. Thanks and take care, Paul Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
